Would You Breastfeed a Starving Baby?

11:41 PM Totally Kristin

Did anyone see or hear about the article in USA Today that was about Salma Hayek and her work with the UNICEF/ Pamper's One Pack = One Vaccine Campaign.

She actually breastfeed a starving baby. I was personally surprised that the media didn’t make it a “thing” because you know sometimes they do. This totally should be one of those situations, but it sort of is. She is a celebrity and all. So it got me thinking. Could I breastfeed a starving infant? Or is it such an intimate personal thing, or is it knowing that the baby could get formula. Obviously they didn’t have means for formula so the situation called for it.

Are you a mom who is currently nursing and would you feed another infant? How do you moms feel? Check out the video below to see what I’m talking about. Then take the poll on the sidebar.

If I still had my milk, and I knew a baby was STARVING? OF COURSE I WOULD GIVE BREASTFEED IT!
I would want someone to save my babies life if they could. I come from immigrant Italians, and "wet nursing" when my Mother was in Italy and very young was just something that one did, if you had milk, and your neighbor was poor or the baby was ill.

I applaud Salma for doing what she did... it was the ultimate in offering 'herself'.
When I had my 3rd baby, a woman in the next room had a baby that needed breast milk to survive, and I was asked by her mother if I would be willing to pump and give her baby some milk. I did. Many other mothers did too. It was the least we could do.

This is beautiful and so true to heart!

Salma Hayek is truly an angel and a role model for all of us MILKY MAMAS and for MAMAS everywhere!

And, if I could help another bebe by nursing him/ her, I would do so in a heartbeat! : )))

I am not nursing now, but have in the past. This is a beautiful story thanks for posting it. It shows that their are still compassionate caring people in the world. I would have to say yes I would breast-feed a starving infant!

I am so glad the media and others aren't making a big negative thing out of Salma Hayek nursing the baby. No one would give it a second thought if she gave the baby a bottle or gave a starving child table food. But, people can be weird about breastfeediing because it IS so personal and intimate. I think what she did is amazing, especially given that, as a celebrity, the world watches everything she does and she opened herself up to criticism.

I found it interesting that they actually "showed" her nursing the baby. I thought there were many people offended by us moms nursing in public? I guess if we all had breasts like her, it wouldn't be a big deal?

I'm nursing my 9 month old son and when I watched this, I was torn. Nursing is something that creates a bond between me and my children, not to mention feeds them. I still don't know how I feel about this whole story. I'm glad she had it in her mind that she was trying to help the baby.

Thank goodness the media portrayed this in a positive light. What she did was an act of unselfish KINDNESS! Yes, I would absolutely feed a starving baby! How could one not?

To look at it from another perspective, IF my baby was starving and I could not supply food, I would be forever grateful for someone to come along and give my baby nurishment.

I would absolutely, the only thing that would "worry" me is diseases and what not. I'm going on almost 9 months strong nursing Charlie. I can only hope that another mom would offer to feed her if she were starving.

I'm in the mindset that you create a bond with your baby by holding, loving, cuddling, and calming them not necessarily by feeding them. So I wouldn't be concerned that suddenly my baby would bond with the food source.

I watched this video when it first surfaced and thought it was wonderfully done. Bringing a much needed spotlight to something so natural, yet completely frowned upon in so many places in the world today. We have boobs for a reason. ;)

Thanks for sharing this video! I would definately do it--in fact my mom couldn't nurse me because her milk never came in. Her doc highly recommended it though because I was a twin born early and since I was so small, my aunt actually breastfed me. I know it's probably different since she is family, but I would do it for a starving baby that I didn't know. Another alternative--I would pump and donate that milk.

In a milky moment, I would do it. I actually had an experience in breastfeeding another baby. I was breastfeeding my own baby... and one afternoon my neighbor came to my home with her infant grandson, whom she was babysitting. The little guy was screaming... his own mommy was nursing him... and the solution was quite simple. For that entire afternoon and evening, I nursed both babies. It was wonderful and fulfilling and beautiful!

I just wrote about this on my blog earlier today! You're welcome to check it out if you're interested. I think it's great. As a mother with the ability to nurse, how could you not? Wouldn't every bone in your body tell you to?

Absolutely. And I totally applaud Salma Hayek for all of her work with Unicef. She is not only stunningly beautiful but smart and funny and I was so thrilled that she actually gained a normal amount of weight while she was pregnant, unlike most celebrity twigs with basketball bellies.

She is really a great role model for young women.
