My Fake Baby

7:10 PM Totally Kristin

lets%20talkMoms try wrapping you head around caring for baby, that is not real. How does this actually happen? What’s the difference between a memory and a weird obsession?

Tonight while watching the BBC a show came on called My Fake Baby. The show detailed a group of women who all had a love and passion for the fake babies. Essentially these fake babies are only dolls. One woman I could relate to, she just loved having a newborn around. Another mom wanted to create the memory of her dead child. A litte creepy, but somehow I could relate.  I couldn’t imagine what loosing a child could do to a mother. Then you had another woman who ordered a beautiful doll, she unwrapped her only to find she was cracked. It was like every bit of this woman was torn apart at that moment. Then I thought to myself okay this isn’t just a memory thing it’s an obsession.

Some of the women don’t just collect the dolls, or have them created for memory. They actually put their babies in car seats, and talk them on walks. They treat them like an actual baby. They’ve actually made such life like dolls that they breathe. Not literally, they just have the breathing action. But what goes too far? We are all moms we can relate to the feeling of a newborn.

Moms I want to find out what you think. Is it incredibly creepy? Touching? Can you relate? Watch the video and tell me what you think!

I'm not sure how I feel about this to be honest. I find nothing wrong with having a life like doll or collecting it. But taking it out and treating it like a real baby is a bit... odd. I couldn't imagine having a doll created in memory of a lost child, as I've never been in that position. People mourn different ways, who am I to judge?

But for me personally, a lot of those babies creeped me out more than they made be go "Aww what a cute baby - er doll!"

These people freak me out. I think they are a little frightening. If only they would take the money they soak into these babies with the real baby gear, clothing, and doll costs and put it to good use, they could make a real difference in the lives of real children.

Personally, these dolls creep me out because they are so lifelike, but then again, the dolls that our kids play with that pee and open their eyes are creepy to me, too.

I haven't walked in the shoes of a person who has lost their chid or have never been able to conceive, but I can see how these dolls can be used as a coping mechanim for their grief. I would hope though, that they are receiving counseling to help with their grief rather than just using the dolls to block reality.

I could only watch the first minute of the video because it really freaked me out. I think realistic looking dolls are creapy, not cool. My mother-in-law bought 2 very realistic looking dolls for my girls for their first birthday... they live in a closet.

And for someone who actually takes these dolls out in public and treat them like actual babies... I think they really need their heads examined.

I read a news story a while back when someone had one of these realistic looking dolls in a carseat in their car. They left the doll there while doing some shopping, and when she came back she found paramedics breaking into her car to "save the baby". Only to find out it was one of those realistic looking dolls.

    People are just weird.

What in the world? Really? I don't know what to say or feel about this. I can say, I don't know anyone PERSONALLY that indulges in this type of behavior. In a way I wish I did so, I could ask they what the REAL DEAL is.

Then again, I can't understand the way some pet owners feel the pet is like family and allows the pets to sleep in their bed and lick them in the face. Oops, a little off topic ;)

Sounds kind of creepy, but I would understand that "dead baby thing". I probably wouldn't do it. It's just really creepy.
